Dear Graduate:

Community colleges are environments of opportunity. From diverse backgrounds and varied experiences, you came to Kingsborough Community College for many different reasons. The one thing that you all now have in common is that you are all Kingsborough graduates. For many of you, that means that this is the first milestone in your pursuit of higher education, For others, it means that you have acquired the skills that will put you on the track towards a meaningful career. You need not doubt your ability. As others have done before you, you have the power to make a positive contribution to our world. In the words of Nelson Mandela, as he addressed the issue of overcoming self-doubt in his inaugural speech, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we our powerful beyond measure.” Let me assure you that you have proven that you are good enough to turn you opportunity into success.

An old proverb states, “What was hard to endure is sweet to recall.” As graduates of Kingsborough, you have accomplished much through your hard work and you deserve to reflect upon your efforts, to appreciate the obstacles you have overcome, and to glory in your achievement. We are all like the old sea captain who says that while he did not like being in a storm at sea, he liked having been in a storm at sea. We are different people for the experiences we have gone through, and, I hope, we are better people for the hardships we have endured. But we know that there are new seas waiting to be explored and, yes, even new storms to brave.

Now, it’s time for you to begin setting new goals. I wish you success as you determine that new destination in your life and courage in you journey. Wherever your future may lead, please remember that your success began at Kingsborough Community College. Congratulations and good luck!
