The Brooklyn Gateway Faculty
Arthur Zeitlin, Principal Investigator and co-director of the project is also Chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. Professor Zeitlin's main areas of interest include cell biology, human anatomy and physiology. Earlier in his career Dr. Zeitlin worked at the Brookhaven National Laboratories and the Columbia University Cancer Institute. Professor Zeitlin has taught Biology at Kingsborough Community College for over 34 years and is currently the Coordinator for Kingsborough's "Bridges to the Baccalaureate" grant with Medgar Evers College, and was coordinator for Kingsborough's "Nutrition Bridge" grant-project with Brooklyn College and The Crossing Boundaries Project, also in partnership with Brooklyn College. He is the recent recipient of a $20,000 "Partners in Technology" software grant from A.D.A.M. software inc. and has also developed an interactive multi-media software program on the use of the microscope currently utilized in the Biology Department. Professor Zeitlin has also published several articles on remediation in higher education and has made numerous presentations at regional biology conferences.

Co-director of this project and Professor of Biology at Brooklyn College, Dr. Eckhardt has been involved in the teaching of science for over 37 years. Dr. Eckhardt's research interests include recombinant DNA modification of commercially important fish species to provide molecular tags for conservation efforts and the development of specialized test panels for detecting the sensitivity of malignant melanoma cells to potential therapeutic agents. He is the former Co-PI for The Crossing Boundaries Project linking Kingsborough Community College and Brooklyn College to increase the pool of well-trained science teachers for the NYC Dept. of Education, director of Brooklyn's Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and currently working with the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). He has worked with the MARC program (minority research training) and the New College Now program (collaborating with science teachers from four neighborhood high schools). Other outreach programs with NYC schools have included Project Beacon and the Macy Foundation's initiative in the use of Latin and Greek in high schools. He has collaborated with several CUNY community colleges on marine biology initiatives and institutional reform of SMET undergraduate education. Professor Eckhardt is also currently involved in the development of web enhanced coursework and distance learning programs in the sciences.

Professor Markus is a Professor of Biology at Kingsborough Community College (KCC). He has earned a B.S., Biology from Brooklyn College, an M.S., Biology from the University of Michigan, and has M.S. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University Teachers College in College Teaching and Academic Leadership. He was the co-coordinator of Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) initiative at KCC from 2002 through to 2005. He was a member of the KCC delegation to the AAC&U Institute on General Education held in Newport R.I. May 19-23, 2005, and is presently an active charter member of the General Education Revision Committee.

Dr. Carolyn Jarvis was the external evaluator on the NSF-funded Crossing Boundaries Project that linked Kingsborough Community College with Brooklyn College in an effort to increase the pool of increasingly science-literate teachers in the NYC Department of Education. She continues her evaluative work with us in the Brooklyn Gateway Projeect.
Dr. Pilchman is the project website developer and assists with on-going project planning and poster preparations. Professor Pilchman was originally trained in Molecular Biology (Ph.D., Biology, CUNY, 1972), and, since 1971, has taught General Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, The Biology of Aging, and The History and Philosophy of Science at Kingsborough Community College. He was the Faculty Science Trainer for Kingsborough's College Now Program from its inception in 1983 through 2003, and has worked as web-trainer for the Crossing Boundaries Project. He has also participated in the STEP and other grants, has co-authored several academic Textbooks and Laboratory Manuals of Anatomy and Physiology, General Biology, and Nursing, and has published his research in the area of marine sediments and plants.
