A.A.S. IN SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY
The Surgical Technology program provides the students with the professional skills required for a career in health care. The program introduces the student to the theory and practice of Surgical Technology and Perioperative practice in the classroom, laboratory and actual clinical setting. Students are prepared to function as a professional and as a member of the surgical team by demonstrating knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical procedures and instrumentation. The learning environment for students facilitates the development of knowledge, skills and values for professional development. The students garner sufficient background to be able to assimilate the policies and procedures of any health care institution consistent with their scope of practice in New York State.
CAREEER OPPORTUNITIES
Surgical Technologists are crucial members of the surgical team. They are employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, cast rooms, ambulatory care units and central supply departments. They are utilized in clinics, ophthalmologists, physicians and dentists offices. With a broad educational background combined with the specialized focus they possess, Surgical Technologists function very well in such diverse areas as medical sales, product development and research, laser technology and bio-medical engineering.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for the Program for Surgical Technology, students must pass the CUNY ACT in Reading and Writing and the COMPASS Math test or meet all requirements for existing developmental coursework. Students who have not passed these examinations may not be admitted to the Curriculum Code for Surgical Technology. ENG 12 and BIO 11 are pre-requisites for entry into the program. The student must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a grade of “C” in all courses required for the program. Courses from other colleges to be applied toward program requirements must have grades submitted for them.
As of Fall 2010 all Surgical Technology students must provide documentation as to legal status in one of these categories:
- U.S. Citizenship
- Permanent residency
- International Student with F1 status
- Granted asylum, refugee Status, Temporary protected Status, Withholding of Removal, or deferred Action Status by the U.S. Government.

On behalf of the Faculty and staff of the Department of Nursing, I am pleased to welcome you to the Surgical Technology Program. We hope that you will have a gratifying, scholarly journey as a student here at Kingsborough Community College.
This handbook contains valuable information to facilitate your achievement of academic and professional excellence as a surgical technology student. Please keep it as a reference throughout your education. It is a supplement to the College Catalog and College Student Handbook. All information contained in this handbook is subject to change. CRITERIA FOR RETENTION IN THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST PROGRAM
Criteria for retention in the Surgical Technology Program mandates that students:
- Receive no more that two grades below “C” in any of the pre or co-requisite courses.
- Earn a minimum grade of “C” in all Surgical Technology Courses
- Students earning less than a “C” grade in a Surgical Technology Course may repeat the course one time.
- A second earned grade of less than “C” in any Surgical Technology course will result in dismissal from the Program.
- Clinical Performance in the Practicum Courses must be at a Satisfactory level to remain in the program
PRACTICUM REQUIREMENTS
After the initial semester, the student registers for a Practicum each semester. This is clinical practice in the Operating Room at various clinical agencies participating in surgical procedures. |
