Kingsborough Community College is hosting the third
annual symposium and festival that provides a unique
opportunity for students, faculty, and members of
the community to gather together, under a common banner,
to engage in a dialogue centered on the environmental
problems and challenges we face at the dawn of the
twenty-first century.
The Eco-Festival mission
is:
- To raise ecological literacy
- To foster global citizenship
- To promote meaningful dialogue
about environmental issues
- To inspire environmental
action and stewardship
Our planet is in crisis. Climate disruption, deforestation,
habitat destruction, a cascade of species extinctions
– these dramatic changes demand dramatic responses.
Kingsborough’s Eco-Festival 2008 provides a
forum where students, teachers, and concerned citizens
may explore the issues of poverty, health, and sustainable
development in a global context. The symposium is
designed to educate, motivate, and inspire meaningful
action.
Eco-Festival 2008 will be constituted by students
and faculty from many disciplines, community leaders,
and environmental activists, writers, and artists.
It will feature keynote speakers, films, lectures,
workshops, and other events and activities. Students
and teachers from the larger educational community
are invited to attend. The event will be free and
open to the public. Eco-Festival is under the umbrella
of the Kingsborough Coordinated Undergraduate Education
(CUE) Initiative and is co-sponsored by the Student
World Assembly.
Confirmed keynote speakers for the Opening Ceremony
on April 8 are Dr.
Lisa Rainwater of Riverkeeper and Reverend Patricia
Ackerman of the Over the Rainbow Institute for Living
Ethics. Prof. Tria Case of the Center
for Sustainable Energy at Bronx Community College
is the keynote speaker for Day 2. Mr. Daniel Hendrick
of the of the New York League of Conservation Voters is the keynote speaker
