Support for Scholarship - Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)
Loretta Brancaccio Taras - Biological SciencesFran Smith - Behavioral SciencesGot questions about your students' learning? Then join KCTL's Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Program, led by Loretta Brancaccio Taras (Biological Sciences) and Fran Smith (Behavioral Sciences).
The SoTL Program is offered in five phases:

Phase 1: Reading, Thinking, Observing, & Reporting
In Phase 1 you will be provided with materials and resources at Seminar I to help you
  • Locate, read, and discuss SoTL literature
  • Frame research questions based on observations of your own teaching and your own student's learning
  • Understand the process of submitting an IRB application and become certified to do research with human subjects
  • Create your own Carnegie KEEP Toolkit project snapshot where you can log the progress of your SoTL work throughout your project

Phase 2: Designing and Planning a Research Project
In Phase 2, at Seminar II, you will be able to

  • Explore various research methodologies and find those appropriate for your question - even if they might not be those predominating in your discipline
  • Examine a variety of classroom assessment techniques

Phase 3: Data Collection
In Phase 3 you will be asked to

  • Post your research question, procedures, and data collection instruments on your KEEP Toolkit project snapshot
  • Communicate with other faculty working on SoTL projects so you can support each other's work in this phase and the next

Phase 4: Preliminary Data Analysis & Making Work Public (Part I)
In Phase 4 you will have the opportunity to

  • Present both your procedures for collecting and analyzing data and a sample of your findings to other faculty working in SoTL
  • Either revise your design, in effect treating Phase 3 work as a pilot, or proceed to writing up your study to submit for publication or for presentation at a professional conference on SoTL or in your discipline

Phase 5: Making Work Public (Part II)
Once you have

  • Completed Seminars I and II
  • Had your IRB proposal approved
  • Posted your work on your KEEP Toolkit snapshot
  • Collected data
  • Shared data and preliminary findings with other SoTL participants

You will receive one hour of reassigned time or 25 hours at the 60% rate (at the discretion of your chairperson) in Phase 5 to support you as you revise your design and/or prepare your work for publication. For more information or to join this group, please contact Loretta at ltaras@kbcc.cuny.edu.
