The
academically underprepared community college student may also
be psychosocially underprepared for college, a condition contributing
to the development of classroom-specific social phobia and a
high attrition rate. Michael Miranda (Department of Behavioral
Sciences) has developed a program - Find Your Classroom Voice
- Developing Students' Class Participation Abilities - which
uses individual and group cognitive-behavioral techniques to
develop students' academic and social integration with the college,
thereby promoting active learning, academic success, and persistence
in the pursuit of an Associate's degree. Prof. Miranda facilitates
a faculty group where interested faculty, through four one-hour
sessions, learn how to use the program in their own classes
and discuss other innovative ways to assist these students.
