ESL Outcomes

A longitudinal study conducted by Prof. Bailin Song of the Department of English compared the academic success of 385 ESL students who began their studies in the Intensive Program with another 385 ESL students who did not begin in the Program. Students who started at Kingsborough during the period beginning Spring 1995 and ending Spring 2000 were all tracked until Fall 2003.

  • Performance in First-semester ESL: Significantly more Intensive students passed their first semester ESL course than did non-Intensive students (339 vs. 269).
  • Subsequent ESL/Developmental English Courses: Intensive students performed significantly better than non-Intensive students in subsequent ESL and/or developmental English courses (mean grade score of 2.57 vs. 2.24).
  • Overall GPA: Intensive students on average earned a significantly higher grade point average (M = 2.83) than did non-Intensive students (2.83 vs. 2.51).
