Student Development
Student Development courses are integral to freshman learning communities. SD 10: Freshman Seminar is a 1-credit course that provides information and skills important for transition to and success in college. SD 11: Career and Life Planning is a 1-credit course in which students explore careers with emphasis on their interests, abilities, aptitudes, and college experiences. Both SD courses are part of Intensive ESL links; only SD 10 is part of Opening Doors links.

In Opening Doors, SD 10 is taught by instructors/case managers. Instructors/case managers play an important role in helping incoming students to successfully transition into Kingsborough by teaching students necessary skills for attaining academic success, by providing students with academic support and advisement, and by helping students develop their knowledge of the college and its resources. Instructors/case managers do extensive outreach to students and also help to promote connections between linked courses by linking SD 10 thematically to the other courses in the learning community.

SD 10 and 11, in the Intensive ESL Program, are taught by counselors who support ESL students in the acculturation process.
