Why Are We Offering This Conference?

There are many local, regional, state and national health leadership development resources. However, the essential first step in leadership development is to identify, inspire, and motivate health practitioners (and students) to begin to think of themselves as leaders and to want to develop as leaders. And that is the purpose of the “Finding Your Inner Leader” conference. Our goal as conference co-sponsors is to increase the number of public and community health practitioners who want to take on leadership roles in the future. Leadership opportunities exist everywhere…at the project, committee, unit, campaign, agency/organization, and coalition level. We believe that only through leadership succession planning can we maintain and advance the progress we have made to date to improve the quality of life in our communities and to reduce health disparities. As a result of our conference, current and aspiring public and community health specialists should be able to…
  • Articulate the health challenges in New York City today that require strong leaders

  • Explain and demonstrate what it means to have a leadership mindset

  • Discuss what it takes to sustain a leadership role

  • Compare and contrast the personal attributes and actions that characterize many of today’s courageous health leaders

  • Describe leadership challenges and rewards that await future health leaders

  • Recognize opportunities for leadership development on-the-job

  • Identify local leadership training and development resources

  • Create opportunities for future leadership mentoring relationships

  • Discuss steps for designing and implementing personal leadership development plans

What Makes This Conference Worth Your Time and Effort?

It is unique. The conference is unique in its focus on promoting health leadership development.   We know there are many quality leadership development resources out there, and we’ll provide information on as many of them as we can.  What we are doing that’s unique is reaching out to you - public and community health practitioners – to provide a forum in which you can recognize your leadership abilities, to demonstrate the myriad of leadership opportunities available now and in the fast-approaching future, and to encourage you to take on those leadership roles.

It is inspirational as well as informative.  The way we promote health leadership development is by offering speakers and experiences that trigger a series of insightful participant “Aha!s” throughout day.   Our speakers are remarkable women and men who are currently leading important health movements and initiatives…people whose passion, dedication, commitment, and achievements will touch and inspire you…and teach you what it takes.

It is multi-faceted.  The conference offers four tracks of workshops in addition to five plenary/general sessions.  Whether your focus is (1) deciding whether or not to develop yourself as a leader, (2) finding ways to promote staff leadership development, (3) finding ways to help students develop their leadership skills on and off campus, (4) working a community leader with health leaders, or (5) identifying Diabetes prevention and management leadership opportunities, we have sessions that offer valuable information and insights.

Its local focus has global applications.  Though the conference does highlight local health challenges and though it does specifically promote leadership development among Greater New York metropolitan area health workers, the information, insights, and inspiration has, we believe, universal relevance and applicability.  We have attracted – and warmly welcome - participants from other regions, states, and countries to come experience “Finding Your Inner Leader” and to consider the possibility of replicating it locally.

Attendees love it! In groups of new-found friends and colleagues, participants leave smiling and waving.   Many have come back the following year to take different sessions.  And what’s really great is that when they come, they bring colleagues, co-workers, and, best of all, their supervisors!
