Below are answers to questions prospective students often ask about
Kingsborough Community College’s New Start Program:
- What is the New Start Program?
- New Start is a program designed to assist students who have had academic difficulty at certain cooperating senior colleges (see Question 2).

- Up to 30 previous college credits can be applied toward an associate degree at Kingsborough, with no prior grades carried over.
- New Start students are offered specialized counseling (see Question 4).

3. If I was a SEEK, HEOP, or EOP at my prior college, am I eligible to participate at Kingsborough’s College Discovery Program?
A New Start student who participated in SEEK, HEOP, and/or EOP programs at his/her previous college MAY be eligible to participate in the College Discovery Program (CD). In order to determine eligibility for the program, potential students need to submit a completed Transfer Request Form from their previous SEEK, HEOP, and/or EOP program to the College Discovery Office in room L516 and meet with the CD Associate Director. If student is deemed eligible, they are provided with academic, personal and financial aid support services and must agree to utilize the program’s support services.
4.What support does the New Start Program provide?
All students in the program are invited to meet with a New Start counselor to assist them with their progress and their plans for the future. The New Start counseling office, under the supervision of Brian Mitra, is in room C-102, phone (718) 368-5115,
e-mail newstart@kingsborough.edu.
All students in the program are invited to meet with a New Start counselor. Counselors are equipped to assist students with academic, career, personal, and transfer concerns and issues. In addition, specialized sections of SD 11 (Career and Life Planning) and SD 12 (Strategies for College Success) are offered to New Start students every semester.
Furthermore, the college offers remedial courses, workshops, and tutoring for students who need help with passing the CUNY
reading, writing, or math assessment tests. Tutoring in most other subjects is also available.
5. Does "New Start" mean my previous academic record will be erased?
No. Although Kingsborough will not count your previous grades, your transcript at your previous college remains unchanged. New Start's academic and counseling services are designed to help you overcome any negative effects those grades might have.
6. What if I want to return to my previous college after attending Kingsborough?
Although readmission to a college where you were on probation may not be guaranteed, doing well at Kingsborough will greatly improve your chances. Check with your previous college(s) for information about their readmission policies. When you are ready to apply for readmission to your previous college, ask your New Start counselor for assistance.
7. How do I choose my courses at Kingsborough?
A New Start counselor or a faculty advisor from your major will help you choose your courses during the registration period. Please bring a copy of your transcript or grade reports to advisement to avoid duplicating courses for which you may receive transfer credit.
8. How do I receive credit for the courses I passed at my previous college?
To receive transfer credit, you must apply for Advanced Standing (SEE ADMISSIONS CHECKLIST STEP 6). Kingsborough will transfer only those credits that are applicable to the degree that you intend to pursue. A maximum of 30 credits may be transferred.
9. What if the college I attended was not one of the cooperating senior colleges - can I still be in New Start?
Only students from the cooperating senior colleges listed above are eligible for New Start. However, students from other colleges may apply to Kingsborough as regular transfers and get some of the same benefits, such as acceptance of up to 30 credits without transferring grades. Contact the Academic Village Center at 718-368-6700 or email info@kbcc.cuny.edu for information.
10. What if I attended Kingsborough before?
If you were enrolled at Kingsborough at any time after high school (except on permit), do not apply for New Start. Instead, file an application for readmission in the Registrar's Office (room A-101). You can apply for transfer of your senior college credit after you are readmitted.
11. Will I still be eligible for New Start if I wait until next semester or some other future time to enroll?
Yes. There is no time limit on eligibility. Contact the Academic Village Center whenever you are ready to apply.
12 How do I enroll in New Start or get more information?

To get this certification, you must request an exam waiver from the University Application Processing
Center.
