Finding Health Care Costs

Health Care Expenditures on the Web

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) collect health care spending data, including total U.S. health care expenditures, public vs. private expenditures, expenditures as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and projections for health care expenditures.  CMS is a Federal agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services.  Access the data by following these steps:

  1. Go to Web site http://www.cms.hhs.gov/statistics/nhe/default.asp
  2. To locate current data, under “Estimates, National Health Accounts, Historical and Current Year” click on Table, and then select Table 1. (URL:  http://www.cms.hhs.gov/statistics/nhe/historical/t1.asp)
  3. To locate projections scroll down the page (URL:  http://www.cms.hhs.gov/statistics/nhe/default.asp) to “Projections” section.
  4. Under “National Health Expenditure Projections 2003-2013 (Published February 2004)” select Tables, and click on Table 1(URL:  http://www.cms.hhs.gov/statistics/nhe/projections-2002/t1.asp)

Periodical Articles

Useful databases for locating in-depth articles that discuss health care expenditures are Business Source Premier (EBSCO) and LexisiNexis.  Brainstorm to develop a list of keywords for your search.  For example, expenditures also may be referred to as costs or spendingMedical may be used in place of health care.  Combine the keywords to locate the best health care articles.  Include United States in your search to limit the articles to expenditures in the U.S.  Examples of keyword combinations to use for your search include:

            health care and expenditures and united states

            medical and cost and united states

Business Source Premier (EBSCO)

1.      Go to http://libraries.cuny.edu

2.      Click on E-Journals and Reference Databases.

3.      Select Business Source Premier (EBSCO).

4.      Enter keywords in the search box.  Use ”default fields” option.  Click on the search button.

5.      At the top of the results screen, select Scholarly Journals to view in-depth articles.

LexisNexis

1.      Go to http://libraries.cuny.edu

2.      Click on E-Journals and Reference Databases.

3.      Select LexisNexis.

4.      Select Medical under the Academic Search Forms on the left side of the page.

5.      Click on Medical Journals.

6.      Enter keywords into search box and click on search button.
