Consumer health oriented database:

·         Health & Wellness Resource Center.  This one-stop source includes health news, medical encyclopedia, alternative health encyclopedia, drug and herb finder, health organization directory, health assessment tools, disease profiler, videos and links to authoritative Web sites.

Professional/clinical oriented databases:

  • CINAHL.  Over 2,700 nursing and allied health journals, books, nursing dissertations, and standards of practice, dating back to 1982, are indexed.  Full text material includes more than 70 journals plus legal cases, research instruments, clinical trials, etc.

·         Clinical Pharmacology.  This database contains current full text scientific and patient information on all U.S. prescription drugs, herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new and investigational drugs. Searching is by generic or brand names.

·         Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition.  This database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals (about 450 peer-reviewed) and indexes and abstracts nearly 850 others. Coverage dates vary with some full text dating back to 1975.

  • MEDLINE.  MEDLINE is the premier source for citations and abstracts of more than 4,800 current biomedical journals, including medicine, nursing, allied health, health care system, etc.  Links to thousands of full text articles are included in the EBSCO version.

Databases with both consumer health and professional/clinical material:

·         Health Reference Center Academic.  This database contains full text articles and citations from journals, magazines, reference books, newsletters, and pamphlets.  Coverage dates vary.

  • LexisNexis Academic.  Most full text articles in the Medical section are from healthcare news sources; a smaller number are from scholarly journals, including American Journal of Law and Medicine, Journal of Legal Medicine, Public Health Reports and The Lancet. Coverage dates vary.

Web sites

The Internet is an excellent source for health information, offering much of the latest on research, treatment and other topics.  For quality and reliability, use the Web sites below or select others that end in "gov" (government) or "edu" (educational institutions).  Avoid sites that end in "com" (businesses) which are less likely to be objective.

General health and disease information:

  • MEDLINEplus URL:  http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/
