Immigration and Multicultural Studies Resources

The Kibbee Library has many sources covering immigration and multicultural studies.  This guide focuses on information available in:

·        reference and circulating books in the Library’s collection

The Library uses the Library of Congress classification system.  Call numbers for books about the history of immigration and immigrant culture begin with “E184.A.”  Books that look at immigration from a political viewpoint begin with “JV6465.”  Consult CUNY+, the CUNY libraries’ online catalog located on the Web site, for call number and availability. 

 

Immigration and multicultural studies reference books are located on the shelves behind the Reference Desk on the second floor.  Circulating books are located in the fifth floor stacks for books beginning with call number “E184.A” and in the sixth floor for books beginning with call number “JV6465.”  Journals (current, bound, and microform) are in the Periodicals section on the third floor.  Access electronic journals from the E-Journals and Reference Databases

Locating Books in CUNY+

To find books about multiculturalism and immigration, use the following subject keywords that best matches your topic:

To search for books about a specific ethnic group combine one of the above keywords with the name of the ethnic group.  Examples of ethnic groups include African Americans, Asian Americans, Caribbean Americans, Hispanic Americans, Greek Americans, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Polish American, and Russian Americans.

Databases are available from the Alphabetical List of Databases section URL:  http://www.kbcc.cuny.edu/library/alphalist.html on the Kingsborough Library Website.  For on campus access, click on the yellow square to the left of each database name.   From off-campus, click on the green house icon and type in the library barcode from your Kingsborough ID card.

Ethnic NewsWatch

A bilingual (English and Spanish) database, Ethnic NewsWatch contains full text articles from ethnic, minority, and native magazines and newspapers.  Titles include African American Magazine, Hispanic, and Russian Life.  Select the “Basic Search” to enter the keywords that best describes your topic.  Use the drop down box to select a particular ethnic group.

J-Stor

Choose history, population studies or sociological journals to search for articles about immigration and multiculturalism.

PsycARTICLES (EBSCO)

This database includes articles about the psychological aspects of multiculturalism and ethnic relations.

The Urban Institute, a nonpartisan economic and social policy research organization, publishes reports analyzing immigrants' settlement patterns as well as U.S. policies regarding immigration.

 

Multicultural Fiction

Many fine writers, Amy Tan, Edwidge Danticat, Jhumpa Lahiri to name a few, have written novels from an ethnic or minority viewpoint.  Use CUNY+ to locate titles by entering the keywords:  name of an ethnic group and fiction.  For example, entering irish american and fiction, will produce a list of novels exploring the Irish American experience.
