Library Main

1. Where’s the best place to start my research?

Start your research in the Library’s second floor reference section. You’ll find:

  • Reference desk staffed by librarians to help you find the information you need
  • Reference books, including encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesauri
  • Computers with Internet capability to
    • search for books via our online catalog CUNY+
    • search for articles via a variety of online databases

2. How do I access CUNY +?

  • From a Library computer, double click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. That will bring you to the Library home page http://www.kbcc.cuny.edu/kcclibrary/.
  • Find the word “Books” on the left and bring your cursor to the right and click on “CUNY + Plus.” You’ll arrive at the Basic Search page.

3. How do I search CUNY +?

  • Subject searching provides the most focused results. On the Basic Search page in CUNY +, see the drop down menu on the left and change “Keyword anywhere” to “Keyword subject” or “Subject begins with.” Type in a subject and click “Search.”

Here are a few subject headings related to spanking to get you started:

child abuse

corporal punishment

family violence

child rearing

discipline of children

parenting

  • Keyword searching is less precise but may still be effective. Here are a few keywords to use alone or in combination to get you started.

child discipline

encyclopedia and parenting

maltreatment

encyclopedia and family

family and violence

neglect

Note: A good strategy is to do a “keyword anywhere” search using one or two keywords and obtain a list of results. Click on a title on that list and get a “Record Display” page. Look for “Subjects” on the left side of that page. These are Library of Congress subject headings; click on them to link to more books on that subject.

4. How do I find books on the shelf?

Use the book location charts posted throughout the Kibbee Library:

Book Location

5. How do I search for articles using online resources?

  • Go to the Kibbee Library home page http://www.kbcc.cuny.edu/kcclibrary
  • On the left side of the page, bring your cursor to “Electronic Databases and Services,” and click on “Alphabetical List of Databases” on the right.
  • The page that appears shows a list of online resources. Note the yellow box and green house icons to the left of each database name. Click on the yellow box to access resources on campus and the green house to access off campus.
  • See instructions at the bottom of the page for off campus access. (If you haven’t used the Library this semester, go to the Circulation Desk and have your ID card activated before trying to log on.)
  • Resources without green house icons are available only on campus.
