WHAT:

Dr. William Hogarth, Director of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service will speak about developing a national aquaculture policy and Dr. Donald Kent, Executive Director of Hubbs-Sea World will speak about open water aquaculture or sea ranching.

WHY:

In less than a decade, Chilean sea bass went from an obscure dish to a major culinary craze -- and then it almost vanished again due to over fishing.
"In 10 years, we've taken a fishery that was vibrant, and we over harvested it," said Donald Kent, executive director of Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute. "We're having chefs say, 'We're not serving Chilean sea bass. The fisheries are devastated."'
The same is true of orange roughy and redfish. These were harvested so aggressively, they are now permanently off the menu in many places, Kent said.
Kent believes the situation may become even worse over the next decade. This is why conferences like this are so crucial.
