WebLab#5: DNA Transcription and Translation

Goals:

  • To increase your understanding of two fundamental processes of molecular biology: transcription and translation of DNA's hereditary code.
  • To apply your knowledge of the genetic alphabet to predict base sequences in RNA
    during transcription.
  • To analyze the role of the four different types of RNA molecules required for the eventual translation of the genetic code.
  • To understand the concepts of RNA editing and interrupted genes.
  • To apply your knowledge of the genetic code to predict specific changes in the amino acid sequences of proteins due to changes in the genetic code.
Look over the following exercise titles. Use the link button to the left of each exercise to view exercise details. Choose only one exercise to complete.
      WebLab#5: Exercise #1
  DNA Replication and Transcription
In this exercise you will learn details of the transcription of the four known types of RNA from DNA templates, and the cellular functions of thoses RNA molecules.

      WebLab#5: Exercise #2
Translation: Using the Genetic Code to Construct Proteins
In this exercise you will learn details of the translation of the genetic code into protein synthesis. You will use the genetic code to construct the amino acid sequences in proteins and predict the consequences of mutations.
