The Women's Center

The Center offers women and non-traditional students

The Center offers women a welcoming, supportive environment in which to explore educational, professional, and lifestyle issues. It is an ideal place to meet and network with other students who are also working towards a successful transition to college.

The centers hours are:
Monday - Friday 9:00A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

What Is The Center For Women ?

The Center provides women a place to gather, socialize, network and examine the transitioning lifestyles that will allow them to develop to their fullest potential.

What activities does the Center support?

The Center co-sponsors (in association with departments, programs and clubs), lectures, workshops, seminars and peer support groups that include: sexual harassment, domestic violence, stress management, legal issues, assertiveness training and leadership skills, health & wellness, financial planning and budgeting, parenting, career counseling and mentoring. Support groups are formed in response to students’ needs and schedules.

Services:

  • Speakers and discussion groups on relevant topics of concern to women and non-traditional students
  • Special programs, projects, seminars and workshops
  • Lending library
  • Open house for all students each semester
  • Women’s support groups
  • Current events discussions, mid-life issues and single parenting
  • Individual personal and life transition counseling
  • Brochures and information relating to women’s issues
  • Information about women’s study courses and women’s issues

PROGRAMS:
The Center offers and co-sponsors in association with departments, programs and clubs, lectures, workshops, seminars and support groups concerning the issures of women and non-traditional students.

GOALS:
The Center for Women offers support and services to those students who are encountering life transitions. Through our on-going services we encourage retention and academic success for women and non-traditional students by providing specialized support programs and referrals to community resources for identifiable populations including re-entry, low-income and special services. We help our students identify and foster an awareness of the possibilities for academic success and positive personal development.

March 7th   “Coming Out Muslim”   Discussion Group

March 7th   “Coming Out Muslim” Performance   2:00-4:00    Room U219
This play explores the issues associated with “coming out” as a lesbian in the Muslim community.

March 12th   “Keynote Speaker”   11:30-12:30,   MAC Rotunda
Speaker: Wendy Barker, Author, Poet and Professor of English at the University of Texas.

March 13th     Women and Peace Movements, 10:30-11:30   Room M239
Presenter: Dahlia Valle-Peterson:  This workshop will explore women’s historical role in peace movements worldwide, including current events.

Presenter: Heidi Lopez:   The workshop will explore how women have been affected by social policies.

March 14th   “Women’s Role in the World of Art”   10:30 – 11:30   Room M239
This workshop will explore the role that women have played in the art world.

March 14th   Sexuality & Women with Disabilities: “To Be Human is to be Sexual”
11:30-12:30     Room M239         Presenter: Stella Woodroffe
This workshop will be a discussion of social attitudes toward the sexuality of women with disabilities and the problems that are outgrowths of these attitudes.  The presentation will also look at possible solutions to the problems.

Panel discussion will focus on: Women & Sexuality: The event will explore how women’s sexuality is constructed in American culture (the dichotomy of being sexual, but not too sexual), the double standard for men and women etc.

Students showcase their talents in the area of song, poetry and dance.

March 27th   “Independent Women”  Room U219   11:00-2:00
Women studies Club will be showing a PBS film about women & television which explores how women have transformed from the model housewife to complex and sometimes controversial characters.  From “I Love Lucy” and “Mary Tyler Moore” to “Desperate Housewives” and “Nurse Jackie”, this documentary shows an evolution of women’s roles in American sitcoms.

March 27th “Contemporary Feminism”/Panel Discussion   3:00-5:00 Room U219
Presenter:  Professor, Katia Perea:  The discussion will explore what feminism looks like today.
