Committee to Advance Pluralism and Equity

Exploring the Richness of Diversity
The Kingsborough community is proud to promote and celebrate its diversity. Our faces are many; our voices, different and distinct. It is within this milieu of diversity that we come together to form a community dedicated to the ideals of pluralism and human equity.
Our acknowledgement, appreciation and pride in our diversity establishes a common purpose and reaffirms the worth and dignity of all individuals. From these fundamental beliefs, harmonies of pluralism are born, creating a spirit of equity that enables us to live our lives with tolerance, mutual respect, fairness and concern for one another. Learning to be a citizen in a diverse society is an intrinsic aspect of education, and essential to the mission of Kingsborough.

Kingsborough provides assured opportunities to interact with people from multi-cultural backgrounds through its co-curricular program in student leadership, clubs and events.

The KCC Committee to Advance Pluralism and Equity (C.A.P.E.) provides a means by which to recognize, integrate, communicate, respect, understand and celebrate our individuality. The Committee, made up of all segments of the college community, functions as a catalyst for shaping an environment that encourages a "spirit of fellowship." Each member of the Kingsborough community brings to this campus a diversity that is welcomed, encouraged, and protected. Let this be a point from which to build bridges of understanding between us.

What is CAPE?
The fostering of human equity on the Kingsborough campus (as defined by age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, race and culture) creates an environment where students share a common purpose and, at the same time, accept and understand inherent differences. The cohesiveness and wellness of our college (in light of our mission to provide higher education for a non-traditional, ever-changing pluralistic population) is directly related to the endorsement of values that help to promote cross-cultural awareness and interaction. We also recognize that although mono-cultural courses, clubs, events, or other related activities enhance a common sense of pride and knowledge, they must be interfaced with opportunities to develop a deeper appreciation of, and communication with, students from diverse backgrounds. Ultimately, the responsibility for advancing the rights, differences, and values of other rests with all of us. Together, we can be both the force and the model for cultivating an enduring regard for interdependency.
It falls then upon the College, its faculty, and staff to celebrate and support the pluralistic interests and backgrounds of the students. From the celebration of diversity comes the inner strength and personal development all students need in order to capitalize upon educational opportunity.

The KCC Committee for the Advancement of Pluralism & Equity (C.A.P.E.) provides a means by which to recognize, integrate, communicate, respect, understand, and celebrate our individuality. The committee is comprised of counseling and instructional faculty, students, staff and administration.

Most importantly, the C.A.P.E. committee recognizes that addressing these issues involves a process, not a product. New issues will always emerge. The committee is prepared to see its effort as a continuous one in the life of the organization.
