Be prepared to meet people whose views differ widely from yours. Your studies will include concepts that challenge ideas and assumptions you thought unassailable heretofore. Your instructors will encourage discussion of many viewpoints, since intellectual inquiry is the heart of the college experience. Participate fully, for this is how you will learn to weigh the evidence which leads to making sound decisions related to your career, life style, philosophy and values.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY IS THE KEYWORD TO SUCCESS IN COLLEGE
The tradition of the University as a sanctuary of academic freedom and center of informed discussion is an honored one, to be guarded vigilantly. The basic significance of that sanctuary lies in the protection of intellectual freedom: the rights of professors to teach, of scholars to engage in the advancement of knowledge, of students to learn and to express their views, free from external pressures or interference. These freedoms can flourish only in an atmosphere of mutual respect, civility, and trust among teachers and students, only when members of the University community are willing to accept self-restraint and reciprocity as the condition upon which they share in its intellectual autonomy.

Academic freedom and the sanctuary of the University campus extend to all who share these aims and responsibilities. They cannot be invoked by those who….violate the norms of conduct established to protect that freedom. Against such offenders the University has the right, and indeed the obligation, to defend itself.

FINDING ASSISTANCE AT KINGSBOROUGH
As you develop as a student, you may be overwhelmed by the thought that you must “go it alone.” Be assured that The Office of Student Affairs is committed to helping you achieve self-understanding and direction, and assisting you in reaching your maximum educational, social and personal potential.

The student-counselor relationship is central to the Office of Student Affairs' efforts to assist students. This counseling relationship begins with a new student orientation and enrollment in the freshman orientation course (SD10). Individual and group counseling sessions that focus on issues related to academic and career planning as well as personal and social concerns are offered by counselors. Counselors are available to meet with students both day and evening, and Saturdays, whenever classes are in session.

Students, who require extensive help with individual problems, can receive professional, specialized counseling offered on a strictly confidential basis. Where protracted or particular help is required, referrals are made to appropriate experts on campus or to community resources or agencies.

Some programs that offer individualized counseling include:
Special Services, College Discovery/Bilingual Studies, The Freshman Year Experience, English as a Second Language Counseling, Returning Adults, The Women's Center, Non-Traditional Careers, Retention, Advanced Student Services, Substance Abuse Prevention, Personal Counseling, Career Counseling, Placement and Transfer, Financial Aid, Health Services and Outreach, Student Life, Evening and Weekend Student Services, International Student Affairs, and The College Opportunity to Prepare for Employment Program.
