Career Types/Path:

Substance Use Disorder Counselors work with clients individually and in group sessions, using an array of evidence-based practices. They help clients to focus on accomplishing multiple goals such as eliminating substance use, improving how they cope with stress, assessing and rebuilding professional relationships, reestablishing their career, and improving their personal relationships. Substance Use Disorder Counselors also assist clients and their families to connect with community-based, recovery-oriented resources to support their stabilization over the long-term.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that Substance Use Disorder Counselors may hold job titles such as Behavioral Disorder Counselor, Addictions Counselor, Case Manager, Chemical Dependency Professional, Clinical Counselor, Correctional Substance Abuse Counselor, Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist (DATS), and Prevention Specialist. With additional higher education and training, SUD Counselors are eligible to hold leadership positions in non-profit and for-profit organizations such as clinical supervisors, program managers, clinical and executive directors.

Employment Outlook:

Program graduates face a positive job market. According to the BLS, vacant positions for Substance Abuse, Behavioral Disorder, and Mental Health Counselors are expected to increase by 22% between 2018-2028, which is much faster than the average (5%). Most positions are full time and require at least a bachelor’s degree. Some States’ and employers’ requirements can vary from a high school diploma and certification to a master’s degree. Approximately 50% of our students receive employment offers from their internship sites.
