WE ARE CURRENTLY NOT ACCEPTING NEW STUDENTS
The City University of New York’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) is an exciting new program that enables eligible students to earn their Associate Degree as quickly as possible. The ASAP Program at Kingsborough Community College draws on the best resources of the College to prepare our 250 students to complete their Associate Degree and transfer to a four-year college/university of their choice.
Students are required to complete at least 12 credits each semester and commit to earning their Associate’s degree within two to three years. The hallmarks of the Kingsborough ASAP program include:
ASAP students eligible for federal and/or state financial aid receive additional ASAP funding to pay the balance of tuition and school fees.
Cost-free Textbooks
Each semester all ASAP students are provided with their textbooks, which could otherwise cost as much as $500 each semester.
Connected Community
All ASAP students were required to attend an intense two week summer institute. The institute connected students with their ASAP peers and advisors, introduced them to campus and student life. During the school year, ASAP students are organized in cohorts of no more than twenty-seven students and are taught by top faculty. Being an ASAP student is like getting the benefits of a small college within the nation’s largest urban university system.
Block Schedule
We provide ASAP students a range of scheduling options designed to help them balance college life with the demands of work and family. ASAP students choose from a variety of convenient morning, afternoon, evening class schedules.
ASAP students are assigned to one of four advisors. The role of an advisor is to be a facilitator, coach, teacher, counselor and mentor. The advisors at Kingsborough Community College provide academic advisement to motivate and maximize the development and growth of ASAP students. They assist students in gaining knowledge and awareness of their strengths and weaknesses as well as the skills that are necessary for academic and personal success. Specifically, the advisors provide timely & accurate information regarding curriculum & graduation requirements, assess student progress to identify at-risk students to refer to appropriate campus resources and aid students to develop an academic plan with appropriate course sequencing in all majors, and transfer options to baccalaureate programs at senior colleges. Throughout the academic year, skilled tutors work with ASAP students to give them an academic boost outside the classroom.
Our Job Developer works with ASAP students to develop their resume, strengthen interview skills, explore career interests and coordinate campus job opportunities.
Laptop Computer Preferred Borrowing Privileges
ASAP students have the privilege to participate in a lap top loaner program which enables them to borrow a lap top for three days. They can take the lap top off campus. This service supports ASAP students who have limited computer access off campus.
All ASAP students receive during the Fall07 and Spring 08 semester free weekly delivery of the New York Times. One of our goals is to motivate our students to become educated citizens of the world. Many have long computers on public transportation to and from school. We expect ASAP student to read the New York Times during the week. Further, we encourage the English Faculty to incorporate the New York Times in the classes.
During the Spring Semester of 2008 ASAP students will have the opportunity to participate in three day tour to visit the New York State Capital in Albany, New York or the nation’s capital in Washington DC. The purpose of the tour is to expose our students to life outside Brooklyn. The majority of our students do not travel outside of the NYC and we want to introduce them to important governmental and cultural landmarks.
