President's Monthly Report

December 2018

Dear Campus Community,

I hope that this email meets you all in good health and spirts; and I trust that your new year is off to a great start. I am pleased to share with you the following salient highlights from the month of December.

On December 3, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness launched ‘Your Voice, Your View’ Faculty and Staff Satisfaction Survey. There were 413 respondents. The data which are in the processed of being analyzed and a report will be shared with the campus community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. Your feedback will assist me in identifying areas in need of attention.

After a long hiatus, the BARFIT (Bursar, Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid and Information Technology and Testing) work group has been revived under the leadership of Dr. Wayne Harewood. BARFIT is an interdisciplinary committee that addresses issues around recruitment, admissions, testing and enrollment.

In late November, the College hosted a number of University Board of Trustee members. The Trustees, Michael Arvanities, Henry Berger, Una Clark, Lorraine Cortes Vasquez, Kevin Kim, Charles Shorter, Student Trustee Haris Khan and KCC Alumnae Jennifer Fernandez spent half a day on campus meeting with students, senior staff and conducting a campus tour. Trustees were impressed with our students and reiterated their support for the College.

We also hosted Bridgette Bryant, the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement who met with myself, VP Elizabeth Basile and other members of my leadership team to discuss ways in which the Central Office can support KCC’s giving opportunities.

I attended the Complete College America Conference in Chicago as part of a University contingent. The conference focused on efforts related to the University’s Momentum Campaign. You will recall that the Momentum Campaign is part of the University Strategic Framework and is designed to support student completion through a variety of strategies including Finish in 15, credit accumulation, and degree maps. The College is making steady progress toward in our Momentum efforts and addressing impediments to student completion.

Just in time for the holidays, we received news that KCC was number two among the top scoring teams at the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) Community College Mathematics League Competition. Our own Zhi Ying Laing finished in 7th place with an individual score of 751. Congratulations to Professors Nathaniel Green and Hong Tu Yan for all their mentorship and support of our students.

I was excited to attend my first Nursing Pinning Ceremony at Kingsborough. The ceremony is tradition of nursing programs and signifies their symbolic initiation into the profession of nursing. 53 nurses and surgical technicians were pinned.

Finally, the children in our Child Development Center were even more excited to receive a toy for the holidays as I capped off my office’s Season of Giving with donations of toys from members of the administration to children in the Center.
