What is Distance Learning?

Dear Students:

I am writing to share information about what to expect when classes resumes on March 19.

As you know, all courses from March 19 through the end of the Spring 2020 semester will be conducted via distance learning.

Distance learning means that, except in rare cases, your classes will not be taught face-to-face on campus. Instead you will interact with your instructors and your peers in one or more of the following ways:

  • online through Blackboard
  • through a portal
  • by email
  • or a combination of these or other methods

We are doing this to minimize your risk of contracting COVID-19.

Your professor will determine how they will conduct the class. Some of your instructors may ask you and your classmates to participate in your courses at a set time using an online portal. Other faculty may also ask you   to access course materials, submit assignments and post messages to your peers at a time that is most convenient to you. Some may choose a combination of the two.

No matter what tools they choose, the most important thing to remember is that they will continue to support you and help you succeed.  Most of you will be able to access your courses and communicate with your instructors using Blackboard, but some faculty may prefer to use email or phone. They will share their preferences with you.

We know that taking all your classes via distance learning will be a new experience for many of you.  Be assured that your faculty, your advisors and the Kingsborough staff are here to help.  Dean Brian Mitra has posted information about in-person Blackboard workshops and online Blackboard resources in the Student Guide for Distance Learning.

The College will provide ongoing support and assistance distance learning throughout the semester. Please continue to check your KCC email and the KCC website for further information about the resources available to you – and, please, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Sincerely,

Joanne Russell, Ph.D.
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
