KCC Biology Major Orion Anyango Named CUNYAC/HSS Community College Scholar-Athlete of the Month

The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) and Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) have selected Kingsborough Community College student-athlete Orion Anyango as CUNYAC/HSS Community College Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December 2023.

A native of Utica, New York, Anyango is a member of the Wave’s men’s basketball team, majoring in biology with a 3.67 grade-point average. When awarded the honor, Anyango replied: "Being named Scholar-Athlete of the Month is a testament to the focus put in off the court in terms of being locked into the education. It's a great feeling to be recognized after making it through difficult times in school. It represents my persistence, determination, and will to succeed."

On the court, Anyango led Kingsborough to a pair of victories in December, putting up back-to-back double-digit point-scoring performances in wins over Nassau and LaGuardia. Anyango has started every game for the Wave this season and is the team’s leading scorer.

When asked how he balances academics and athletics, Anyango replied: “The success I’ve had in balancing school and basketball comes from staying on top of my deadlines. I had a schedule made and made sure everything fit into my timeline. I knew how much time I could spend in the gym and gave myself a cushion of time to get into my books. I also had help from classmates and teammates by serving as reminders and motivating me to keep going.”
