Chief Diversity Officer

Corina Lozada Smith, Esq., joined our staff as chief diversity officer (CDO) at Kingsborough Community College in August, bringing a mix of legal experience and public service to her role.

As CDO, Lozada Smith is responsible for ensuring the college complies with federal, state, and local mandates related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. But for her, the job goes beyond regulations. “As a proud CUNY alum, I love the culture at CUNY,” she shared. “My goal is to make all students and faculty feel like they belong here.”

Lozada Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in humanities and justice from John Jay College with minors in English and literature and a law degree from Brooklyn Law School.

Before joining Kingsborough, Lozada Smith served as general counsel and equal employment opportunity officer for Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, an experience she believes prepared her well for her current responsibilities. She’s also held positions at legal service nonprofits, where she fought for tenants’ rights. “My experience working in New York City with various groups across various disciplines allows me to successfully adapt as needed,” she said.

Transitioning into a new institution comes with challenges. Lozada Smith notes that learning the office culture, gaining the trust and respect of stakeholders, and staying up to date with changes in the law and political climate are among the biggest hurdles, but she is eager for what’s ahead. “I'm looking forward to meeting all of the staff and faculty, and I am truly excited for the new semester to start!” she said.

Outside of work, Lozada Smith plays the saxophone, enjoys singing, and likes to spend downtime crocheting or reading a good book.

“I consider myself an eternal student and am excited to see what I will accomplish in higher ed.”
