College Now History

College Now is a nationally recognized, tuition-free partnership between Kingsborough Community College (CUNY) and 39 New York City public high schools, serving nearly 14,000 students annually. The program is designed to support students in successfully navigating the academic and personal transition from high school to college.

Established in 1984 with just 449 students across four high schools, College Now expanded rapidly to 17 schools within five years, evidence of its early impact and growing demand. Today, it continues to provide high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with access to college-level, credit-bearing courses and preparatory instruction at no cost.

Students can explore a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, social and behavioral sciences, business, communications, humanities, political science, STEM fields, culinary arts, tourism, and statistics. Through personalized guidance, College Now counselors help students explore opportunities, complete the application process, review academic records, and develop individualized course plans aligned with their interests and goals.

Courses are conveniently scheduled before, during, or after the regular school day, depending on each high school’s structure. Participants may earn up to 16 college credits through CUNY, with all courses taught by qualified faculty who meet Kingsborough’s adjunct instructor standards.

In addition to academic coursework, the program offers student development and freshman orientation seminars designed to strengthen college readiness. These sessions, led by experienced counselors, focus on study strategies, time and financial management, career exploration, and goal setting. Upon successful completion, students receive an official Kingsborough Community College transcript, positioning them for a smoother transition into higher education.
