Full-time members of the instructional staff are mandated by New York State Law to participate in a retirement system. New staff members have 30 days from the effective date of their appointment to choose a retirement program, and the choice is irrevocable. If no choice is filed within 30 days, the law mandates that the member be assigned to the New York City Teachers' Retirement System.

Full-time instructional staff members may choose between New York City Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) and Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA).

Adjunct members of the instructional staff have an option to join TRS (See Adjunct Benefits Section)

Full-time permanent civil service employees must join the New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS) within the first six months of employment.

Provisional, Part-time, Non-competitive, Exempt and Unclassified appointments have an option to join NYCERS
