Writing Intensive Sections

Writing Intensive Sections

What is expected from a writing intensive course/section?

In a writing intensive section, faculty assign writing to help students think more deeply about course content, to make connections to their own experience and ideas, to reflect on learning processes, and of course to support more effective written communication in formal essays or research assignments.

Characteristics of a writing intensive section:

  • Sections are capped at 25 students, allowing for more individualized instruction.

  • Revision is a required part of formal writing assignments. Students write in drafts based on your feedback, submitting a new draft with the previous one attached.

  • Students write informally about course content, as well, including in response to their reading assignments.

  • Assignments build on one another, allowing for more depth in learning and opportunities to receive feedback on ideas before a final draft of a high stakes assignment is submitted.
