Farm, Food, and Health

Farm FIG

Food and food policy are experiencing a boom in New York City today, and an epicenter of this activity is in Brooklyn. Even closer to home (or our place of work), an urban farm is growing at Kingsborough in the T-cluster. At  KCC Urban Farm , vegetables, fruits, and herbs are grown by and for students in a variety of programs across campus. The farm now also includes a community garden for use in your classes -- visit our website for more information.

KCC Urban Farm

In this FIG, we will discuss ways to include topics in our classrooms and beyond related to environmentally sustainable and equitable food systems and its impact on public health and wellness. We will share and discuss pedagogy and research, learn about and receive updates on the KCC Urban Farm and its events, brainstorm class projects, share student opportunities, and explore hosting activities and events for the campus community. If you are interested in food, growing, and diet as it relates to environmental and public health, and want to join like-minded colleagues, then this is the FIG for you!

Please join facilitator Shannon Caravello (Health, Physical Education, and Recreation) for a series of discussions about how we might incorporate these concepts into current curricula and designing courses and/or modules around it--and how the various constituents of the KCC community can get involved.

For more information, please contact Shannon at shannon.caravello@kbcc.cuny.edu and please visit our site on the CUNY Academic Commons.
